Green Remodeling

There are a number of reasons to do “Green” construction or remodeling. Some people do this because “Green” is their way of life. Some people do it because they are concerned about their health. And some do it because it saves them money in the longer run. Whatever your reasons are, we can work with you and accommodate you.

There are 3 major areas where you can be “Green” during your construction or remodeling project:

We at DLH Entrprises always follow as a base line these ”Green” practices – we try to use lumber that is FSC certified and/or composite materials, use insulation that is free of  Formaldehyde, use Paints and adhesives that have either 0 or low V.O.C.s, use materials that are lower in dust, do framing that is not wasteful and allows for best insulation. We also recycle cardboard packaging and copper and aluminum scrap. We encourage our customers to use the remodeling project as an opportunity to increase Energy Efficiency, improve indoor Air Quality, and Conserve Resources, but it is up to the customer to decide how “Green” they want to be on a project, and we understand and respect their decisions.

On a personal note, I try many of the new “Green” materials in my house first – paints, stains, varnishes, adhesives, cork flooring, etc. before I recommend it or use it in my customer’s homes. My family also drives fuel-efficient cars, line-dry clothes, use energy efficient lighting, and recycle among other things.

Major areas of a "Green" construction or remodeling project

Energy Efficiency  - reducing your Carbon Footprint and saving you money on your gas/oil, and electricity bills

Improved insulation/Super-insulation

Passive Solar Design

Use of Alternative Energy sources (solar, wind, geo-thermal)

Reducing electricity use by means of efficient appliances and lighting

Reducing electricity use by means of effective natural lighting (e.g. sun-tunnel)

High efficiency conventional heaters/boilers/water heaters

Placing air ducts in the living spaces (not in the attics and walls) or using “ductless” systems

Very high performance windows and doors

Green roof (plants/grasses on the roof)

GO BACK

Using Materials Responsibly / Conserving Resourcesreducing waste and saving you money on your water and sewer bills

Use of recycled/reclaimed/renewable materials (e.g. cork flooring, bamboo cabinets, countertops, tiles, roofing from recycled materials, etc.)

Water efficiency (dual flash toilets, high efficiency faucets and showers, “gray water” recycling systems, rain water collection)

Using wood products that are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified and/or composite materials.

Using advanced materials and building techniques/practices

Reusing existing materials when feasible

Recycling packaging, and copper and aluminum scrap

GO BACK

Indoor Air Qualityimproving your quality of life

Eliminating building materials that contain Formaldehyde – like conventional particle boards, MDF and plywood, some fiberglass insulation.

Eliminating paints, adhesives, etc. containing V.O.C.s (volatile organic compounds)

Using materials that create less amount of dust during construction

Effective ventilation

Good air filtration
